The club has over five hundred members of all ages and an additional number if "Social members" who no longer play golf but want to maintain their friendship and contact with the club. The club runs four mens teams who compete in Gwent county competitions, two ladies teams and a Wayfarers and Hallets team. The Juniors also has a team as does the seniors section. We hold competitions every Sunday during the summer and there are quite a few unofficial competitions amongst the members during each week. The very popular Cock-o-the North winter competition is also played on a Sunday from October to April and a typical entry of eighty plus teams of two participate each season.
Some of the benefits for members
- Unlimited use of our eighteen-hole, par 70 parkland course.
- Access to our fantastic Academy Course and Indoor Academy facilities.
- Use of our great membership card system that can be used across our facilities such as the Pro Shop and Bar.
Full Membership for New Members is now ONLY £600 for the first year.
18 – 28 year olds is only £250 per year.
There are about 400 full members who play in most club competitions and there about twenty of these during the course of the summer months ranging from Stableford and Medal competitions to BB’s and the odd “Texas Scramble”. All competitions are played on a Sunday.
The Club Championship knockout competitions are arranged by competitors outside this day with the various finals matches being played during September.
During the summer, the club has four teams in county matches, Hallets and Wayfarer teams.
This leaves the winter for the “Cock of the North” competition and about half of the male members play in this, the winners and runners-up entering the County Final.
Enter the club-house on any Sunday lunchtime during the winter to hear ball-by-ball accounts of every match played – and how unlucky the losers were!
As if this weren’t enough there are several “associations” within the club and these organise many day trips to other courses and also arrange overseas trips in Europe.
If you are a new member, why not join in the Wednesday “Clubnight” competition an occasion to meet other golfers, play 12 holes afterwards, enjoy dinner and indulge in some banter afterwards.
No club can exist without a strong Ladies section and this club is fortunate to have one of the strongest in Gwent. The Ladies organise many of the social events of the year and are an integral foundation of the club. Currently the club has around 75 female members, but this section is expanding rapidly to the delight of everyone at the golf club.
The Ladies run two teams who play against other clubs in Gwent and Glamorgan, each team playing about ten matches each season and always enter a team in the Welsh Ladies Team Championship every June.
A warm welcome is extended to all new members whether they are new to golf or are more experienced players. Ladies competitions are held on Tuesdays and Saturdays with every effort being made to accommodate working ladies.
Along side the clubs social events our ladies have a very active social calendar which includes away golfing days, suppers and fun golfing activities.
Every month we produce a newsletter to keep our members informed and up to date with current events, news items and golfing items.
The section runs many other events each year including Open competitions for Ladies, Ladies Teams, Men and Mixed Greensome Foursomes in July.
The Ladies hold medal or stableford competitions most weeks, generally on a Tuesday plus an annual Lady Captain’s Day and Away Day. In the winter, most ladies play on a Saturday.
Many of the current members first joined as “juniors”, often encouraged by their parents and the tradition remains. In summertime particularly, one can still see parents trying to improve the swing of their offspring – although how they can do this when some of the juniors have a better handicap than themselves I don’t know! We enjoy a very active junior section at Llanwern Golf Club having had past and present members selected to represent both Country and County.
Coaching sessions for beginners, overseen by our club professional Steve Truman, take place on Saturday mornings, with junior competitions being held on Sunday afternoons.
Llanwern also boasts a short Par 3 Academy Course for the use of juniors and beginners alike. This course will allow all basic skills to be practised and mastered in a relaxing environment, instilling confidence and the abilities to move onto our main course.
