Llanwern Golf Club - hole 8

Eighth Hole

Men
Par 4
402 yards
SI 1
Ladies
Par 5
365 yards
SI 7

This is a difficult hole for both sexes as shown by the stroke index for man and the par 5 status for ladies. The difficulty lies in the right-angled dog-leg shape of the fairway and the distance between the tee box to the middle of the elbow. From the white tees this is about 250 yards and about 210 yards for ladies. The approach to the elbow is narrow. Thick woodland and scrub lie along the left hand side, whilst more open but mature trees form the barrier between this fairway and the sixth. Do not hook to the left, this is almost certainly a lost ball. Anything to the right will probably be found although your second shot can pose problems.

If you have reached the elbow and can see the green, then your approach shot is easy. If you have not made the elbow then play safe and use an iron to a position where you can see the green or, if you can hit a good ball, go over the trees to the green.

The green itself is protected by a bunker along its left side and slopes back to front and from right to left – except at the top of the green where it borrows front to back.

Study the flag position and note the ridge!
